Odissi / Kiran Segal

About Odissi:
Odissi, the Indian classical dance form is from Orissa and like any other
Indian classical dance, was initially performed in the temples as a
religious offering by the 'Maharis' who dedicated their lives in the
services of God. It has  close resemblance with sculptures of  Indian
Temples.   The dance is sculpture in movement and sculpture is frozen
dance. Both are an infinite source of joy and wonderment. Add to this the
Odissi music - in lilt and lyricism second to none. A harmonious blend of
the chaste discipline of Carnatic music and the joyous abandon of the folk
music of the east, and one has a spell - binding aesthetic experience.
Although initially , Odissi was not considered as one of the main
classical dances of India, its antiquity has been traced to an early
sculpture found in the Ranigumpha caves at Udaygiri(Orissa). dating to the
2nd century BC. Thus Odissi appears to be the oldest classical dance
rooted in rituals and tradition. Infact the NãtyaShãstra refers to Odra
Magadhi as one of the vrittis and Odra refers to Orissa. Odissi gives the
impression of a soft lyrical style, highly sensuous in form but infact it
is rigorous and challenging to execute with control and precision. The
balance of stasis and dynamics is at the core of this style.  Odissi has
two major facets: Nritta or non-representational dance, in which
ornamental patterns are created using body movements in space and time and
Abhinaya, or stylized mime in which symbolic hand gestures and facial
expressions are used to interpret a story or theme.

About Kiran Segal:
Trained in Odissi by Guru Mayadhara Raut (one of the four architects of
Odissi dance), Smt. Kiran Segal was initiated into dance by her mother
Smt. Zohra Segal - leading dance partner of Uday Shanker and one of the
leading ladies of Prithvi Theatre.  One of the few top ranking dancers who
has played a leading role in popularising Odissi amongst the youth she has
performed widely in India and abroad. She is also the first dancer in
India to have performed with her troupe for the soldiers who were fighting
in Drass and Kargil. Her dance is known for its precision and lyrisicm in
movement and the traditional  nuances which are fast disappear.  For her dedication & contribution to
Indian classical dance, she has been honoured with several titles and
awards, including the Padmashri award, the Sangeet Natak Akademi award,
Kala Shreshtha; Sammaan, Indira Gandhi Priyadarshini award and
Kalpana Chawla award for excellence.
Her dance school "Pallavi" Odissi Nritya Sangeet Vidyalaya imparts
training to several disciples.
